marryingIt was harder than she expected, life after the war. There was just so much loss. Their lives just felt emptier without half of the individuals they had practically grown up with -- Frank and Alice Longbottom, insane in a mental ward. James and Lily, both dead, their son in a home that didn't understand or want him. And Sirius, in prison for a crime Daphne was convinced he did not commit.
But her husband was suffering worse than her -- Daphne, who quietly cried whenever she needed to cry, was dealing with her grief in a relatively healthy way. She allowed herself to be sad, to cry, to sit alone with her daughter and rock her to sleep. Her husband couldn't do that -- or rather, wouldn't, and he had lost so much more than she had. Worse than losing his sister, Castiel had lost control over himself, and it pained her deeply to see how difficult that was for him.
She tried, very hard, to make life easier for him. And being here, at the school, made life easier -- at least a little bit. It gave him purpose, it gave him something to do. Castiel loved teaching and helping others. Even though he sometimes couldn't get out of bed and sometimes got frightened at things Daphne couldn't see, he was able to maintain some level of control in his life, and that was all she could expect of him.
Still, it was hard, and Daphne didn't really know how to make it better except to shower as much love on him as she could possibly manage. So it was after putting Anna to sleep in their big bed that Daphne slipped into their side room in their living quarters, knocking on the doorframe -- his office, as Daphne had promised him he could have his own little library -- before sliding her arms around his shoulders, pressing her lips against his cheek as she hugged him from behind.
"Anna is sleeping if you want to go lay down with her," she murmured, squeezing gently.
He had been reading in the same chair for nearly four hours.
It was time he was interrupted.
